The ST ALICE HOTEL of Harrison Hot Springs.
This resort dates from 1885 when the St. Alice Hotel was built on the
Present site. Immediately "the Baths" became a great attraction and
holiday-makers flowed to the Harrison area. Since there was no road
Your trip would be via a Paddlewheeler. The St Alice was destroyed
by fire in 1920 and in 1926 the first unit of the present hotel was
built.
The resort owes part of it's name to Benjamin Harrison, a deputy
Governor of the Hudson's Bay Co., whose explorers discovered 46 mile
Long Harrison Lake in 1846. About 12 years later, three prospectors
returning in the middle of winter from the Cariboo gold fields added
The second half of the name when they upset their canoe at the south
end of the lake and discovered that the water was nice and warm from
the natural hot springs.
Today the words "hot spring" and "spa" have been knocked out of
The Historic name and the Hotel is known as The Harrison.
The Coffee cup dates from about 1910 and was made in Germany.

is a beautiful turn of the Century General store display cabinet. Great
for the serious collector or retail store. At some earlier time maybe
the late 30's or early 40's lighting was added and does work but should
be rewired. The doors are a roller system and open and close easily.
Top glass has a small break in the corner but is at the back. FOR SALE
OR TRADE VALUE $1295.00.
I love it but have no room for it. Pictures do not do it justice as I photographed it in my garage...

1860 Limited edition Map print.
THIS MAP IS THE FIRST LARGE DETAILED MAP
OF The two Colonies and THE NEW CARIBOO GOLD FIELDS.
THIS IS A TIME WHEN BOTH REMOTE BRITISH COLONIES ON THE PACIFIC
EXISTED. EACH COLONY HAD ITS OWN CAPITAL, NEW WESTMINSTER WAS THE
CAPITAL OF BRITISH COLUMBIA AND VICTORIA THE CAPITAL OF VANCOUVER
ISLAND.
MAP MAKING WAS NOT AN EXACT SCIENCE AS TODAY WITH GPS, SATELLITES, AND AIRCRAFT.
THE MAP MAKERS TOOK OBSERVATIONS FROM THE GROUND WITH SEXTANTS AND HAD TO SEE THESE PLACES FOR THEMSELVES.
TO PRINT THIS MAP IN THE 1860'S IT WAS FIRST ETCHED ON A FLAT BRASS
SHEET IN REVERSE. THEN PRESSED WITH THE INK APPLIED (A LOST ART) THE
HAND EMBELLISHING (OR COLORING) ON MAPS OF THIS PERIOD, WAS A JOB MOST
GIVEN TO CHILDREN, (1800'S CHILD LABOR).
NOTICE RUSSIAN AMERICA "NOW ALASKA" & ALBERTA WAS HUDSON'S BAY TERRITORY.
AT THIS TIME THE BOARDER WITH WASHINGTON TERRITORY WAS IN DISPUTE
AND YOU CAN SEE THE TWO BORDER LINES ON EITHER SIDE OF THE SAN JUAN
ISLANDS (JUST OFF OF VICTORIA).
IN THE KOOTENAYS, KOOTENAY LAKE IS NOT' THE PROPER SHAPE, OBVIOUSLY
THE MAP MAKER WAS TAKING SOME LICENSE AND MAY HAVE REFERRED TO THE
HUDSON'S BAY Co. MAPS FOR AN IDEA OF IT'S APPEARANCE. FURTHER RESEARCH
SHOWS THAT SOME REFERENCE MAPS WERE MADE BY JUDGE BEGBIE'S OBSERVATIONS
FROM HORSEBACK, STARTING IN 1858.
THE MAIN ROUTE TO THE CARIBOO GOLD FIELDS AT THIS TIME WAS BY WAY OF PORT DOUGLAS AT THE NORTH END OF HARRISON LAKE.
THE CARIBOO ROAD WAS NOT COMPLETED BUT A PACK TRAIL DID GO UP AND OVER THE MOUNTAIN AT FORT YALE.
FORT LANGLEY IS NOTABLE BY THE SHOWING OF BOTH THE NEW FORT LANGLEY
AND THE SITE OF OLD FORT LANGLEY, AND THE TOWN OF DERBY ( NOW GONE ).
SOME THINGS SHOWN MAY LOOK INCORRECT BUT ARE TRUE, FOR EXAMPLE
WHERE MODERN DAY ABBOTSFORD IS, WAS A VERY LARGE SHALLOW LAKE KNOWN AS
SUMAS LAKE NOTED FOR IT'S LARGE FLOCKS OF WATER FOWL.
THE LAKE WAS DRAINED IN THE TWENTIES,

1885 Ltd. Edition Map Print.
| THIS MAP IS ON DISPLAY AT MUSEUMS AND HISTORICAL SITES ALONG THE OLD
CARIBOO WAGON ROAD TO THE GOLD RUSH AND BARKERVILLE. THIS LIMITED EDITION PRINT MAP DEPICTS A TIME BEFORE AUTOMOBILES, PLANES, & GASOLINE ENGINES. A TRIP TO BARKERVILLE FROM ASHCROFT WOULD TAKE FOUR DAYS IF CONDITIONS WERE GOOD. THE MAP IS SURPRISINGLY ACCURATE CONSIDERING THAT NO AIRPLANES OR SATELLITES WERE USED. A GREAT EXAMPLE OF HORSEBACK MAP MAKING. FOR OVER SIXTY YEARS TRAVEL FROM YALE TO VICTORIA WAS BY STEAM POWERED STERNWHEELERS. MANY COMMUNITIES ALONG THE FRASER RIVER HAD THEIR BEGINNINGS AS PORTS AND WOOD FUEL STOPS. THE LARGE LAKE IN THE FRASER VALLEY WAS KNOWN AS SUMAS LAKE, NOT MANY PEOPLE ALIVE TODAY WILL REMEMBER A LAKE BEING THERE. NAMES HAVE CHANGED OVER THE YEARS, HOW ABOUT DUCHIEN LAKE, AND EVEN EARLIER KNOW AS DOG LAKE, WE KNOW IT TODAY AS SKAHA LAKE AT THE SOUTH END OF PENTICTON. OH YES, NO PENTICTON, THEN KNOWN AS THE ELLIS RANCH. SOME NAMES ARE LISTED BY THEIR FRENCH VOYAGER NAMES. NAMES LIKE LAC DES TRUIDES OR TROUT LAKE (NORTH OF KOOTENAY LAKE). THE TOWN OR CAMP CALLED KOOTENAY IS THE END OF THE DEWDNEY TRAIL STATING AT FORT HOPE. THIS BEAUTIFUL LIMITED EDITION PRINT, MAP IS SOMETHING TO BE STUDIED AND ENJOYED! $49.95 | |
